The following summarizes the monitoring results on radioactivity in fallout, foodstuffs, and cumulative samples during first half, 2008. Numbers of samples are 533.
Direct radiation¡GThe exposure rates were found between 0.036 and 0.078 £gSv/hr, which were within the variation of environmental background radiation.
Airborne particulates¡GGross beta activities were found between 0.19 and 1.84 mBq/m3, which were far below the warning level of 9¡Ñ103 mBq/m3. There is only naturally occurring radionuclide Be-7 was found with gamma spectrometry.
Water tray samples¡GGross beta activities were found between 0.03 and 1.76 Bq/m2 • month, which were far below the warning level of 9¡Ñ104 Bq/m2 • month. Sr-90 activities of all samples were below MDA. No man-made radionuclides were found with gamma spectrometry.
Rainwater and fallout (collected via water trays)¡GGross beta activities were found between MDA and 636 mBq/L. Tritium activities of all sample were below MDA. No man-made radionuclides wrer found with gamma spectrometry.
Grass¡GOnly naturally occurring radionuclides Be-7 and K-40 were found with gamma spectrometry.
Water sample¡GGross beta activities were found between MDA and 224 mBq/L. Tritium activities of all sample were below MDA.
Tealeaves sample¡GNaturally occurring radionuclides of Be-7 and K-40 were found with gamma spectrometry in Ping-Lin¡¦s and Nan-Tou¡¦s samples. The activities of Sr-90 were found between MDA and 0.14 Bq/kg • fresh respectively.
Soil and sand¡GNaturally occurring radionuclides Be-7, K-40, Th series and U series were found with gamma spectrometry. The activities of Sr-90 were found between MDA and 0.48 Bq/kg • dry.
Foodstuffs¡GIn the diet, gross beta activities were found between 21 and 110 Bq/kg• fresh. No man-made radionuclides were found with gamma spectrometry. In fish and seaweed, etc. No man-made radionuclides were found with gamma spectrometry.
Tap-water¡GGross alpha activities were below MDA of all samples, while gross beta activities were between MDA and 113 mBq/L, which meet the safety requirement for drinking water.
The imported foodstuffs¡GThe imported foodstuffs include seafood can, fresh vegetable, fresh fruit, dry fruit and dry seed, etc. Only naturally occurring radionuclide K-40 were found with gamma spectrometry.
Tile¡GData of radioactivity in selected tiles are lower than refernce level for building material.
Based on this biannual survey, we conclude that the artificial radioactivities in Taiwan are
within the variation of background environmental radiation. It is accessed that between January and June 2008,
the committed effective dose due to inhalation, food and tea leave consumption is far below
the required by law.
